Debt elimination may seem like a great notion until you realize that your creditors are not too eager to agree to half of the total amount you owe. If you have been making payments each month, even if you have only been paying the minimum amount, your creditors are happy. Credit card issuers make a lot of money from debtors who pay only the required amounts. As long as you are making minimum monthly payments, your lenders have no reason to negotiate with you. Your debt elimination service is going to tell you to mail money to them, rather than your creditors and to ignore any notices from your creditors. After your bills have gone unpaid for a while, they will then negotiate with your lenders to get them to lower your debts.
There potential problems to transacting with debt elimination businesses. Transacting with one of these companies may lower your bills a bit, but you will find it very hard to obtain credit again anytime soon. Lenders do not like customers who do not pay. If you don't pay your bills for any reason, you are going to be reported as one who doesn't pay to the credit authorities. Money owed that is written off by your creditors will be treated by the Internal Revenue Service as taxable income, so you will have to pay taxes on the debts you did not repay. If you haven't been paying off your bills, it's going to damage your credit score.
There are even better ways to find financial freedom than by hiring companies that air commercials on late night tv or radio.
